(H.E. Hon Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland):

It is a great pleasure in my seventh year as Governor to greet Queensland's Chinese community on the occasion of the Spring Festival and the arrival of Chinese New Year 2021.

This year, 2021, is the year of the Ox. The many praiseworthy characteristics associated with the Ox — hard-working, positive, dedicated and modest — encourage us to look towards both the past and the future.

They remind us of the extraordinary work of our frontline workers in health and other important sectors in 2020 and our gratitude for their endeavours on our behalf. They also inspire us all to work together towards a better 2021.

The Spring Festival is traditionally a time when families gather to celebrate, and we have all come to value this opportunity even more after our shared experiences over the past year.

The many traditions surrounding Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival are a reminder of the deep roots of Chinese culture. They also bring to mind the many ways in which Queenslanders with Chinese ancestry have enriched the communities in our State, with some of these wonderful contributions reaching back more than 150 years.

Kaye and I are delighted to wish all members of Queensland's Chinese community a happy and productive Year of the Ox, 2021.

(Hon Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier of Queensland):

I extend my best wishes to Queensland's 136,000-strong Chinese community and our many friends in China as the world celebrates the Spring Festival and ushers in the Year of the Ox.

Looking to the second animal in the Chinese Zodiac, this year we take inspiration from oxen strength and determination to recover from a very challenging 2020.

COVID-19 has changed our world for the foreseeable future – how we work, how we communicate and how we celebrate our most beloved traditions.

Thanks to Queensland's strong health response to date, we are grateful that a number of local Chinese New Year celebrations can proceed, albeit on a smaller scale. However, this year most Queenslanders will enjoy a digital celebration of the occasion, and I thank the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Brisbane for their online festivities.

May the Spring Festival mark the start of a brighter year – one that brings health and economic recovery and new opportunities for Queensland–China partnerships.

Please accept my best wishes for the Chinese Spring Festival celebrations.

I wish you and your loved ones a happy new year and good health.

Ni-Hao! I'm David Chrisafulli, the Leader of the LNP and the Leader of the opposition in Queensland. Wishing you a happy Chinese New Year.

We live in different times, and the fact that we have to celebrate such a significant, significant part of your community's calendar for an online rather than in-person is something that all of us regret.

But we must not let it pass without acknowledging how special the Chinese Community is in the Australia fabric. You represent the second largest migrant intake, and we are better as a society for having you. For all the things you've helped to bring to Queensland and Australia, whether that through farming, cuisine, we welcome you and embrace you,

and want to see you continue to play that magnificent part you do.

In this Year of the Ox, it will be a different year. But through the trials and tribulations of COVID, Queensland has a story to sell. We are clean, we are green and we are welcoming, and we are a society that will continue to welcome people to come to this country and make it the great place it is.

So, on behalf of every one of the LNP, thank you for what you do for our state, for our country. Enjoy the celebrations, and next year it will be in person and will continue to celebrate all that is magic about China.

Thanks very much.
